Abstract

Motivation in teaching has been found one of the significant factors in improving teacher-students’ relationship, academic performance and students’ wellbeing. However, the use of counseling skills in enhancing motivation of teaching is still scarce. Therefore, a university course, Personality Development, conducted using counselling skills is made compulsory for trainee teachers. This study aimed to measure the effect of the usage of counselling skills in the Personality Development course in increasing motivation in teaching among trainee teachers.   A number of four hundred ninety six trainee teachers (N = 496) who have gone through the course, and one hundred (N = 100) trainee teachers without the Personality Development course were involved in this ex post facto design. The level of interest in teaching is compared by utilizing a questionnaire developed by the researchers. Result shows that nearly all trainee teachers who have taken the Personality Development course are at high level of motivation in teaching compared to those who have not taken the course.  Trainee teachers also gave positive remarks and concluded that they are more positive in dealing with challenges in educating students in the future. Findings give direction to design strategies for the university subject in enhancing motivation in teaching among trainee teachers.
